The town council has reached an agreement to host a stage start in the men's Volta in 2025 and 2027, and to debut as the starting venue for the women's race in 2026.
After announcing that the town of Bages will be the first to host a stage start in the next edition of the race, the municipality has made official this morning the collaboration agreement with the Volta that will link it with the historic Catalan race for the next three years.
Sant Vicenç de Castellet has made a clear commitment to the Volta Catalunya, an agreement that was signed this morning at the town's Town Hall, in a ceremony attended by Mayor Daniel Mauriz and the President of the Tour of Catalonia, Rubén Peris, among other municipal authorities. The event served to sign the collaboration agreement between the City Council and the organisers of the race, which establishes that the town will host the start of a stage of the historic Catalan race in 2025 and 2027, while in 2026 it will do the same, in this case, for a stage of the women's race of the Volta Catalunya.
Sant Vicenç de Castellet is the largest municipality in Bages Sud in terms of the number of citizens. With a population of over 10,000 inhabitants, it has commercial, cultural and health facilities and services, among others, that make it the capital of the rest of the surrounding municipalities. Thus, there are numerous attractions that, together with its natural environment, make it an ideal logistical point for holding an event such as the Volta.
On March 27, during the 104th edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, the town will welcome the convoy of the 24 best teams in the world and a total of 168 participating riders. A debut in the cycling event that will bring a top-level international event to the city, during the fourth stage of the race. A highly anticipated stage, which will link Sant Vicenç de Castellet and Montserrat through the landscapes of central Catalonia.
In 2026 the protagonism of Sant Vicenç de Castellet will move to the women's race of the Volta. It will be in its third edition that the town will bring together the best cyclists in the world in a stage start. Let's remember that the first edition of the women's race of the Volta was held last 2024, with a great sporting and organizational success and with the victory of one of the greatest stars of women's cycling in history, the Visma I Lease a Bike rider, Marianne Vos.
A few months later, during the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya 2027, Sant Vicenç de Castellet will once again host the Catalan UCI WorldTour race. It will be the 106th edition of the Catalan round, which will once again bring to the town all the infrastructure of a large-scale international cycling event.
Daniel Mauriz, mayor of the town, stressed during the ceremony that ‘Hosting one of the five most important cycling events in the world and the third oldest round in history fills us with pride and gives us the opportunity to show that Sant Vicenç de Castellet is a municipality committed to sport and health. It will be an unforgettable experience for our town that we will accompany with activities that invite everyone to enjoy the Volta’.
For his part, Rubèn Peris, general director of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, values very positively the three-year agreement with the municipality; ‘From the Volta we are doubly congratulated, firstly, to welcome an unprecedented venue in the history of the race, and secondly for the agreement made official today, which will link us with Sant Vicenç de Castellet until 2027. Its location between two natural parks, Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac and the Natural Park of the mountain of Montserrat make it the ideal place for the realization of very attractive routes, which will surely make us experience a great sporting spectacle’.
With the route already confirmed and waiting to be presented in the coming weeks, the 104th edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya begins the countdown to an edition that will feature some of the best riders in world cycling. Names like Jonas Vingegaard, double winner of the Tour de France or Primoz Roglic, four times winner of the Vuelta and who already knows what it means to win the Volta Catalunya (2023), have already confirmed their attendance. From March 24 to 30, Catalonia will once again be the centre of attention thanks to the UCI WorldTour Catalan race.
