Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) has been crowned champion of the 104th edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya on Sunday 30 March after the 7th stage, a day of maximum excitement in Barcelona. The Slovenian cyclist, 35 years old, has stood out alone 20 kilometres from the arrival at the circuit of Montjuïc to add his second stage win this edition and thus take the overall classification of the race ahead of the young Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) who has started the final stage as leader in third position.
139 riders took the start of the final stage of the Volta a Catalunya 2025, which anticipated maximum excitement until the last moment thanks to the equality between Juan Ayuso and Primoz Roglic, who were separated by just one second in the general classification. Thus, everything was wide open before an explosive final stage of 88.2 kilometres with start and finish in Barcelona and the six passes over the Alt del Castell de Montjuïc (2nd category) as the great judge.
However, the battle started from the first sighs of the stage with the fight for the bonus seconds. Primoz Roglic struck first by leading the intermediate sprint in Viladecans, located at kilometre 12.6 of the stage, while Juan Ayuso hit back by winning the second intermediate sprint, which was contested at the first crossing of the finish line in Barcelona, at kilometre 41 of the course. Everything was still at stake with six laps to go on the Montjuïc circuit, where Primoz Roglic was able to demonstrate his superiority to win his second victory in the overall classification of the Volta a Catalunya after the one he achieved in 2023.
The Slovenian went on the attack with three laps to go, 20 kilometres from the finish, gaining a slight advantage on the hardest slopes of the climb to the Castell de la Castell in the Catalan capital, which he continued to extend until the finish line, which he crossed with 14 seconds ahead of Laurens De Plus (Ineos Grenadiers) and Lennert Van Eetvelt (Lotto) and 19 over the selected group of favorites, which included Juan Ayuso, who was unable to respond to the Slovenian's offensive.
Thus, Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) has climbed the podium as champion of the Volta a Catalunya 2025 in Barcelona, crowned in the Catalan race two years after his first victory, accompanied by a young Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) who has shown his great projection, while the third place on the podium went to the Balearic rider Enric Mas (Movistar Team), who was 53 seconds behind Roglic after trying to get closer with two laps to go in a final stage with excitement until the last gasp.
