Castelldefels completes the route of the 2nd Volta a Catalunya with one stage start

February 12 th 2025 - 10:30 [GMT + 1]

The 2nd women's edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya has already confirmed all its stages, after the entry of Castelldefels as the starting point of its final day. Thanks to the agreement between the organisers and the council of the Baix Llobregat municipality, the best cyclists in the world will be in Castelldefels on Sunday 8 June to start a final stage that will crown the final winner of the race in Barcelona.

With this confirmation, the start and finish venues of the three stages of the 2nd women's edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, which will be held between 6 and 8 June and will once again bring together the best cyclists in the world in three high-level stages around the Catalan territory, are now complete. Before this final stage, the race will start with a stage between El Perelló and Reus, and the second one will start from Bagà to experience a spectacular finish at Coll de Pal.

Castelldefels, a coastal town 20 minutes from Barcelona and 10 minutes from the airport, enjoys a privileged location, with the Mediterranean Sea bathing the south of the town and bordering the beginnings of the Garraf Natural Park to the north and west. The link between Castelldefels and the Volta is not new, as the city was a major protagonist, hosting four stage starts and one finish of the men's race and becoming a starting and finishing point of the race.

Much of the limelight was focused on the 1960s: in 1964, Castelldefels hosted the Grand Depart of the 44th edition, with the first stage finishing in Barcelona, which was won by the Italian Primo Nardello. On the other hand, in 1967, Castelldefels hosted the finish of the 47th edition of the Catalan race, which crowned a legend like Jacques Anquetil. However, Castelldefels was again a protagonist of the Volta a Catalunya in 2021, in the well-remembered 100th edition, with a stage start from the Olympic Canal de Catalunya that ended at the summit of Vallter 2000 with victory for the winner of that edition, Adam Yates, and has continued to be linked to it during the last editions of the men's race, where it has hosted several intermediate sprints.

The mayor of Castelldefels, Manu Reyes, said “Castelldefels is a city that breathes sport, we are the destination for sports tourism, and the fact that the women's Volta a Catalunya will start the next edition from our city is very good news, an announcement that fills us with pride”. In Castelldefels we are committed to sport and women's sport. Reyes states that “we have athletes and clubs that represent sporting excellence, and we will be more than happy to welcome the participants of the next women's Volta Catalunya as they deserve”.

We are very happy to add Castelldefels to the route of the 2nd women's Volta a Catalunya. Although it has not hosted a stage start or finish for many years, the city has been present on the men's Volta route in recent years with different intermediate sprints, and we are very grateful for the new achievement we are making by including Castelldefels as a stage start. A support that will help us in the challenge of consolidating our women's race as a reference race at an international level”, explained Rubèn Peris, director of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya.

After a spectacular first edition celebrated in 2024, which saw a memorable victory of a legend of women's cycling as the Dutch Marianne Vos, the Volta a Catalunya will consolidate its position in the international women's calendar with its second edition in 2025, where it will experience three major stages around the Catalan territory.
