December 17 th 2024 - 13:40 [GMT + 1]

The women's race of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya will take place for the first time in Tarragona, in a stage that will link El Perelló with Reus.

The second edition of the women's race of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya will have an inaugural stage through the south of Catalonia, starting in the town of El Perelló in Ebro area and finishing in the capital of Baix Camp, Reus. From 6 to 8 June 2025, the best women's cycling in the world will gather in our territory to compete in the second edition of the event, which belongs to the international UCI 2.1 category.

The Volta Ciclista a Catalunya has already practically defined the route of its second edition. After the announcement of a high stage that will take place on Saturday 7 June in Berguedà, the organizers of the event have confirmed the Grand Depart of the Volta through the lands of Tarragona. A stage starting in El Perelló and finishing in Reus.

The women's race of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya was born in 2024 and continues with more strength than ever this 2025 thanks to the support, since its birth, of the Conselleria General de l' Esport de la Generalitat de Catalunya, Provincial Councils and the towns involved as starting and finishing venues for each stage.

In this way, the town of El Perelló, with almost 3,000 inhabitants, will be for the first time the starting town of the Volta. The municipality is located in the Baix Ebre region and is 150 metres above sea level. It has a diverse landscape between sea and mountains and offers visitors a multitude of tourist attractions and outdoor activities such as its historical remains, its numerous beaches and its natural landscapes. Its beaches are characterized by their diversity, from fine stone beaches to sandy beaches and rocky coves.

El Perelló will live next June a cycling day where the public will be able to see the buses of the participating teams and riders, which will make the traditional signature control before the start of the stage, where the participating teams will be presented, and which counted in its 1st edition with seven teams of the highest category of world cycling, UCI Women's WorldTour.

For its part, the capital of Baix Camp has always been linked to modernism. The interest of its architectural heritage is diverse and goes through different periods, with the modernist legacy being the most numerous in the city. Moreover, the oldest architectural element in the city is the Prioral de Sant Pere, built on the site of a Romanesque church from the 15th century. The city is also known for its cultural offer throughout the year, thanks to the Reading Centre, which houses the oldest Athenaeum in Catalonia, and the Bartrina and Fortuny theatres.

The men's Volta Ciclista a Catalunya has been present in Reus 57 times. It has been the finishing venue a total of 29 times, the last of them in 2017 in a stage between Tortosa and Reus won by South African rider Daryl Impey. The legendary Catalan rider Miquel Poblet won on three occasions, in 1948, 1955 and 1960. The city of Reus has been the starting point of a stage of the Volta on 28 occasions.   On this occasion, Reus will be the first time that it will be the finishing point of a stage of the women's race, focusing on all the sporting interest of the day in the second edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya. Terres de l'Ebre and Camp de Tarragona will have a prominent presence in the race, thanks to which we will be able to enjoy some of the most surprising spots on the Costa Daurada.

Noemí Llauradó, President of the Tarragona Provincial Council, is delighted that, once again, the Costa Daurada and Terres de l'Ebre are hosting a major sporting event such as the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya. ‘Major sporting events such as the Volta help to promote our destinations as benchmarks for sports tourism. For this reason, the Patronat de Turisme de la Diputació de Tarragona will be able to bid for a sports sponsorship’.

The Mayor of Reus, Sandra Guaita, expressed her satisfaction at the arrival in Reus of the women's Volta and expressed the council's support for ‘events like this that are a driving force and a lever for change to promote and give visibility to women's sport. Guaita also highlighted the attractiveness and capacity of the city to host major sporting events, which generate a very positive economic impact, especially in the service sector’ and stressed that the government team continues to work to promote sports tourism in Reus.

The Mayor of El Perelló, Samuel Ferré is very happy to make history in Perelló, a municipality with a great cycling history, as it hosts one of the oldest cycling events in Catalonia, ‘La Cursa Ciclista del Perelló’ and a mountain bike race ‘La Emburgada Bike Race’ very consolidated in the territory. The fact of kicking off one of the most important events on the international cycling calendar is a source of pride for the town and the territory of Terres de l'Ebre as a benchmark in cycle tourism.

Rubén Peris, General Director of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya celebrates especially the passage of the race through the lands of Tarragona; We are very happy to have, in this second edition of the race, a stage that will cross the Terres de l'Ebre and the Costa Daurada. El Perelló will make its debut as a new venue in the history of the Volta and this is always a reason to be happy. For its part, Reus reaffirms its commitment to the race which it has hosted on numerous occasions, and which has made it worthy of forming part of the top 10 list of cities that have hosted the start or finish of the men's edition of the Catalan race on most occasions. In this case the joy is twofold, for having an unprecedented venue and for returning to a capital with a long tradition with the Volta, with a firm commitment to women's cycling.

The complete route of the women's race of the Volta, of which only one of the three stages has yet to be revealed, will be revealed next February, coinciding with the official presentation of the route of the men's Volta Ciclista a Catalunya.
