(Barcelona, 09-03-2022).- The Volta Ciclista a Catalunya celebrated the official presentation of its 2022 edition on Wednesday, 9 March at the INEFC facilities in Barcelona. All the details of this 101st edition of the historic Catalan cycling race, which will be held between 21 and 27 March, were made public at the event.
As usual, the presentation of the complete routes of the seven stages of the race was one of the main attractions of the event, broadcasted on television by the Esport3 channel. The President of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, Rubèn Peris, presented the details of the route, which once again this year will provide a great spectacle thanks to the richness of the Catalan territory.
"La Volta is the sporting history of Catalonia, a faithful reflection of society over more than a century of life. Between all of us, we are putting on an event that is magical: the only one that brings the best figures in the world all over Catalonia, that beautifully shows our landscapes, roads and municipalities to more than 15 million spectators, and whose images reach 190 territories", said Peris, who also highlighted the presence of the great cyclists who will once again be present at the Volta.
World cycling stars such as the last winner of the race Adam Yates, the current Olympic champion Richard Carapaz, former winners of the Volta such as Alejandro Valverde, Nairo Quintana or Richie Porte, the former world champion Philippe Gilbert or Tom Dumoulin are expected to be present, which will also have the largest participation of Catalan cyclists in recent years.
The presentation of the Volta 2022 has counted with the participation of numerous political and sports personalities of the country as the councillor of the Presidency of the Generalitat de Catalunya Laura Vilagrà, the general secretary of Sport and Physical Activity Anna Caula, the mayor of Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Carles Motas; Antonio Carmona, technical advisor for education, sports and youth at Barcelona Provincial Council, Jordi Verdú, deputy for Human Resources and Sports at Lleida Provincial Council, Camí Mendoza, vice-president of the Tarragona Provincial Council Tourism Board, Miquel Noguer, president of Girona Provincial Council, and Albert Batlle, fifth deputy mayor of Barcelona City Council, who spoke at different points during the event.
During the presentation, the official jerseys of the Volta a Catalunya 2022, once again designed by the Gobik brand, were also made public. The jerseys will be worn by the leaders of the different classifications: overall (sponsored by Catalunya), mountain (Caser Seguros), regularity (Loteries de Catalunya), best young rider (Barter) and best Catalan (Moritz), which will be awarded on the last day of the race.
The event also showed, as is tradition, the poster of this new edition, which in this 101st edition has been created by the visual artist Francesca Llopis. Meanwhile, the musical group The Penguins premiered live their song "Boires i retrets", which will be the soundtrack of this 2022 edition of the Volta a Catalunya, taking over from Blaumut after winning the competition coordinated through the iCat radio station.
The Volta a Catalunya 2022 will begin with a 172.2 kilometre stage starting and finishing in Sant Feliu de Guíxols. The Volta thus begins a relationship with the city of Empordà as the Grand Départ of the race for two years, and it will do so with a leg-breaking route through the Gavarres massif that promises excitement from the first day, maintaining the trend of recent years.
The second stage will bring many novelties: L'Escala will host for the first time a stage of the Volta and will be the start of a 202.4 kilometre day that will take the cyclists to Perpignan, where the Catalan race has not stopped for 67 years. A historic event that will continue in the third stage, in which the capital of Rosselló will be the start and the prelude to the high mountain stages.
La Molina, a modern classic of the Volta, will be the judge of this third day, with three first category mountain passes in its 161.1 kilometres that will begin to decide the general classification. The following day, the high mountains will also be the main protagonist of the fourth stage, with 166.7 kilometres and another three 1st category mountain passes between La Seu d'Urgell and the ski resort of Boí Taüll, which returns to the route of the Volta en Catalunya 20 years after its last presence.
The longest stage of the race will be the fifth, which will link La Pobla de Segur with Vilanova i la Geltrú on a 206.3-kilometre route that will be one of the clearest opportunities for the sprinters. The sixth stage, meanwhile, will feature a true mid-mountain profile on a route that will showcase the cycling potential of the Costa Daurada. There will be 167.6 kilometres, starting in Salou and finishing in Cambrils, on a route with three mountain passes that will take in the interior of the Serra del Montsant and the Muntanyes de Prades mountains.
Finally, as is now tradition, the Volta will close with a final stage starting and finishing in Barcelona. The capital of Catalonia will once again be the final stage with an explosive 138.6-kilometre route where anything can happen, both in the fight for victory and in the final overall, especially with the six final climbs at the iconic Castell de Montjuïc.
The Volta a Catalunya, the third oldest cycling stage race in the world after the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia, arrives in a great moment in its 101st edition, fully consolidated in the UCI World Tour calendar. The best cycling teams in the world, a total of 24, will be taking to the Catalan roads between 21 and 27 March on a varied and attractive route.
