Sabadell will host a finish stage in la Volta 2023
October 6 th 2022 - 11:50
The Volta Ciclista a Catalunya will have a finish stage of the 102nd edition of the race in Sabadell, something that has not happened since 2001. The race, which every year brings together the best teams in the world, will once again fill the streets of the town with a spectacular finish stage on Avinguda Francesc Macià.
The last time the Volta was held in Sabadell was in 2001, when the town in the Vallès became the starting point of the 81st edition, with a team time trial in which the ONCE team, a specialist in this modality, won.
The common history between Sabadell and the Volta began in 1946, with a stage in which Miquel Gual won in the town. Since then, the city has been the start or finish of a stage on 10 occasions, with outstanding performances, among others, such as Luis Ocaña's victory in an individual time trial in 1971, when the winner of the Tour added the Volta to his list of victories.
The sports councillor of Sabadell City Council, Laura Reyes, has noted that "the arrival of a stage of one of the great international competitions such as the Volta, we welcome it with pride and with the desire to continue with this link in the future. In fact, Sabadell's relationship with cycling is deeply rooted, both for the enthusiasts and for the organisations involved, as well as the illustrious names that have integrated the professional "bunch" of this sport".
For his part, the councillor, Lluís Matas, said that "for Sabadell, it is very important to host events of this importance in everything that refers to the Sabadell brand and to the economic and tourist dynamization of the city. We always talk - and we are working to achieve this - that we want to be the capital of cultural, business and sports tourism and to host important events at Catalan, national and European level".
The president of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, Rubèn Peris, explained that "it was an anomaly that the Volta had not been present in Sabadell for more than 20 years. Returning is a great way to bring the event to the citizens of Sabadell and to celebrate such an important event as the centenary of the Unió Ciclista Sabadell. I would like to thank the City Council for having decided to make a finish stage which is sure to be spectacular and massive in terms of spectators ".
The 102nd edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya will be held from 20 to 26 March 2023, and will participate the 18 best teams in the world, UCI WorldTeams, and 7 invited teams of the UCI ProTeams category. The last winner of the race was the Colombian Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe), together with the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz (INEOS) and the Portuguese Joao Almeida (UAE Team).
