Perpinyà, big news for the Volta 101

The city of Perpignan will once again be part of the history of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, since it will be the scene of a finish and start stages on the next edition, that it will be held from 21 to 27 mars 2022. The capital of Roussillon will receive the Volta riders for the first time since 1955.
The Mayor of Perpignan, Louis Aliot, and the president of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya Associació Esportiva, Rubèn Peris, have signed today the agreement. The city will have a finish stage, and the next day, will live the acts of the start of an stage.
The Volta will arrive to the Catalunya Nord in the 101 edition of the race, in a very remarkable fact, since in the previous hundred editions of the race, only two starts and finish stages had been done, in 1949 and 1955, with the victories for the French Pierre Roux (1949) and the catalan José Mateo (1955).
“The Volta Ciclista a Catalunya is a mythical race not only in Catalunya. I’m particularly honoured, as Mayor of Perpignan, to be able to host this great event in our city. A historical event since the Volta, with 100 editions, had only been through Perpignan 4 times, the last in 1955! “, said the Mayor of Perpignan, Louis Aliot.
“Since I’m President of the Volta I had always the dream of being able to go to Perpignan with the race, and now in the 101 edition we will bring the whole event. I want to thank everyone who has made it possible. It will be a very special Volta” said Rubèn Peris, President of la Volta.
With this pass into the Catalunya Nord, the Volta will be able to prepare a very attractive stages through de Eastern Pyrenees, with the great incentive of ending in a city like Perpignan, who have been also protagonist in the Tour de France, as the start or finish of many stage in the “Grand Boucle.
The Volta, one of the most prestigious one-week event included in the UCI World Tour calendar, was broadcast in its latest edition in 190 countries, with live images on five continents, and year after year brings together the best teams and riders in the world.
In the last edition of the Volta, the British rider of INEOS Grenadiers Adam Yates got the absolute victory in the general classification, followed by his teammates Richie Porte and Geraint Thomas.
