The town of Sant Joan de les Abadesses returns to the Volta a Catalunya route 50 years after its last appearance in the cycling race, where it hosted a finish and a stage start. It was in 1973, in the 53rd edition of the race, when it hosted the end of sector B of the fourth stage, starting from Sant Antoni de Calonge. The victory went to the Italian Wladimiro Panizza, a double stage winner in the Giro d'Italia and one in the Tour de France.
